The Hong Kong government provides strong support to start-ups and SMEs to enhance their competitiveness through operating various funding schemes, building the necessary infrastructure, and providing the latest market information and other business advisory services. The Trade and Industry Department has three established SME funding schemes that help SMEs obtain loans for business development with a guarantee by the Government, explore and develop export markets through subsidising their participation in export promotion activities and enhance their competitiveness. These are the SME Loan Guarantee Scheme, SME Export Marketing Fund and SME Development Fund. For further details on the eligibility and application procedures, please visit the website http://www.smefund.tid.gov.hk. Other funding schemes such as the Innovation and Technology Fund, Research and Development Cash Rebate Scheme and Design-Business Collaboration Scheme provide funding support for SMEs to move up the value chain. Further details can be found on the Innovation and Technology Commission’s website http://www.itc.gov.hk. In light of the prevailing uncertain external economic environment, local SMEs may face liquidity problems due to possible credit tightening. The Government has therefore provided a total loan guarantee commitment of HK$100 billion to introduce a special time-limited guarantee product under the SME Financing Guarantee Scheme (SFGS) of the Hong Kong Mortgage Corporation Ltd at a concessionary fee rate. The special measure is open for applications from end of May 2012 for nine months. The special measure would help SMEs obtain loans to meet their business needs. Please visit the website http://www.hkmc.com.hk for details. SMEs set up by foreign investors are welcome to make full use of these resources.

Dear Edith,
I would like to inquire about the correct procedure in starting a self storage business in Honk Kong. We are a self storage business consisting of numerous storage facilities, located in Vancouver and Port Moody, British Columbia. Our flagship storage facility serving Port Moody is state of the art, and can be seen at http://selfstorageportmoody.ca We would like to build similar facilities, however these would cater to markets consisting of higher density population, which would involve the construction of multi story storage facilities as opposed to the one shown in the website.

We are open to obtaining a partnership in the event it is required by legislation, and are hoping to purchase property in Hong Kong.

It would be extremely appreciated if you could provide us with information on how to implement and pursue this goal. If possible, please contact me through my profile.

I thank-you in advance,

Pete
