Art Basel Hong Kong (23 - 25 March 2023)

Art Basel Hong Kong returns to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) with over 170 galleries from 32 countries and territories -
a significant increase from 130 exhibitors in 2022. The show will once again welcome a broad global audience, with the 2023 edition marking the return of all special sectors since 2019, including Encounters, the fair’s sector dedicated to large-scale works; Kabinett, featuring thematic and focused presentations; Film and Conversations.

Innovation and Technology Support Programme funds Artech innovation project to develop Future Cinema System

The Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) will provide funding of HK$35.4 million for an art technological innovation project to develop Future Cinema Systems (FCS), which allow users to virtually experience history, culture and entertainment in next generation immersive cinematic environments. This cross-territorial research project, is carried out by the Hong Kong Baptist University in collaboration with the City University of Hong Kong and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.

West Kowloon Cultural District announced tender award for the Artist Square Towers Project

The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) announced that the tender for the Artist Square Towers Project (AST Project) had been awarded to Winner Harvest Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited. The AST Project comprises three commercial buildings with a total gross floor area of approximately 65,000 sqm, including 62,435 sqm for Office use and 2,500 sqm for Retail/Dining/Entertainment (RDE) uses. It is a key component of the development model of the WKCD, which integrates arts and cultural facilities with commercial destination for Hong Kong.

Hong Kong firms eye mainland China market, view Greater Bay Area as ideal springboard

According to the joint poll conducted by Hong Kong Export Credit Insurance Corporation (HKECIC) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong companies are eyeing the domestic market in Mainland China amid uncertainty in overseas and the Greater Bay Area (GBA) is being viewed as the ideal springboard. More than 70 percent of the companies chose Shenzhen for conducting business among mainland Chinese GBA cities, while 68.8 percent chose Guangzhou and 43.6 percent chose Dongguan. These companies mainly plan to sell products manufactured or sourced by them in mainland China, as well as goods bought abroad, in the GBA cities.

New upgraded URBTIX system to provide enhanced ticketing services

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has launched a new URBTIX ticketing system to provide an enlarged system capacity and enhanced capabilities along with a revamped website (www.urbtix.hk), a brand-new "URBTIX" mobile ticketing app and newly introduced self-service ticketing kiosks. The new system came into operation on 1 December 2022.

New Power of Hong Kong Cinema

The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau announced that the Government will implement two new measures, namely the HK-Asian Film Collaboration Funding Scheme and the Content Development Scheme for Streaming Platforms under the Film Development Fund (FDF). The Film Collaboration Funding Scheme supports collaboration between local and Asian production teams for co-production of films, while the Content Development Scheme focuses on the development of new content on streaming platforms by cross-sectoral production teams. The two new measures will enhance the influence of Hong Kong films in Asian markets and explore new distribution channels.

Government appoints Tan Dun as Ambassador for Cultural Promotion

Mr. Tan Dun has been appointed as the Ambassador for Cultural Promotion for a period of five years with effect from 1 January, 2023, to foster more international cultural exchanges and co-operations. Tan is an internationally renowned Chinese composer, musician and conductor, and was appointed by the UNESCO as a Goodwill Ambassador in 2013. He is currently dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music in New York and an honorary artistic director of the China National Symphony Orchestra.
